All these religions have their roots in the Middle East and are linked to one another in many ways. Christianity was born from the Jewish traditions while Islam borrows from both Islam and Christianity. There exists a clear religious diversity between these three religions, the fact that they share a common trunk notwithstanding. This diversity can be attributed to a number of factors (Peters, 2010). Firstly, the fact that each religion is based on inspirations given to the prophet who started it brings about major differences between them. Judaism is anchored on the belief that God gave the law to Moses hence Jews highly respect him. This law is contained in the Torah. Judaism, unlike the other two religions, lays a lot of emphasis on actions as opposed to dogma (Peters, 2010). As such, Jews highly observe the rules that govern human behavior as opposed to beliefs in traditions. Christians, on the other hand, hold the belief that Jesus Christ was the prophet who was directly inspired by God hence they endeavor to abide by his teachings, which are contained in the bible. Jews differ from Christians here as they do not believe in the prophets who came after theirs such as Jesus Christ and Mohammed. As such, any teachings that were delivered by these two prophets are not followed by Jews. Clearly, this is one of the reasons the three religions differ despite having a common trunk (Phipps, 1999). Christians subscribe to teachings contained in both the old and the new testaments of the holy bible. The Old Testament is based on the Jewish Torah, which means that both religions agree on matters documented in the Old Testament. However, Jews do not follow the teachings contained in the New Testament of the holy bible and this serves as a source of diversi ty between the two religions. Muslims, on the other hand, use the Quran as their holy book (Phipps, 1999). The teachings contained in the Quran differ from those contained in the bible in various ways. In particular, the lifestyles of the two prophets differed in a number of ways. While Jesus Christ never married, Mohammed is believed to have had several wives. This fact brings about diversity between the two religions with regard to the number of women men are allowed to marry. While Christians view polygamy as a license to promiscuity, Muslims allow and practice it to date. It is, however, worth noting that the New Testament does not explicitly disallow polygamy. On the other hand, Jews practiced polygamy as Moses did not impose a limit as far as the number of wives a man could marry was concerned. Polygamy, therefore, seems to be a well established institution in both ancient and comparatively modern days among the Jews. The practice of taking concubines was also highly practiced among the Jewish community (Peters, 2010). Today, Muslims and Christians also differ when it comes to change of ones religion. While Christianity does not force its followers to remain Christians for life, Muslims seem to lack the freedom to change their religion at will. This again can be attributed to the lifestyles of Prophet Mohammed and Jesus Christ. While Prophet Mohammed forced his followers to continue believing in Islam, Jesus never did this. In fact, Prophet Mohammed proposed that whoever changed his Islamic religion needed to be punished by death. Further, Christians today regard God as their father in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Conversely, Muslims subscribe to God but do not consider him their father as Mohammed regarded this as blasphemy. The two religions also differ in regard to mans image. Christians believe that man was created in the image of God while Muslims believe that God has no image in line with the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (Phipps, 19 99). Christians and Muslims also tend to differ as far as the issue of forgiveness is concerned. While Christians believe in forgiving those who trespass against them in line with the teachings of the bible, Muslims believe in avenging against their trespassers as this is what the Quran demands. Ethnography Research of a Sub-Culture In the forgotten recesses of Camp Hovey, resides a small platoon of MP s, standing in small groups in the battalion motor pool, it must be 9:30 in the morning and its must be Monday, Feb. 13th. Behind the large HUMMWV s stands a small tight nit group of males, their ranks range in the e-4 to e-6 range, laughing together. This is the group that always stands away from the rest of the platoon, secluding themselves, forming a group within a group, or their own subculture. This group has the same similarities in the topics they discuss, usually it being the dysfunctions of the platoon, them main topic focusing on the platoon sergeant and second lieutenant. They all agree that the leadership that is†¦show more content†¦Staff Sergeants are the first to go once they decide to try and take up their lost leadership over the group by speaking up and trying to take control of the tightly knit group to stop the defiance. Yet, the group has grown too strong and their seems no way to sto pping it, the group likes its existence too much to give into random authority. In conclusion this sub-culture has began to form the platoon and its behaviors, with the exception of a few soldiers, the group has taken whole control over the platoon. Causing defiance, rebuttal, and an over all sort of dictatorship of the leadership. This sub-culture has caused the whole platoon to be too dysfunctional for the leaders to ever have complete control over it again. Every order is double checked through these leaders and then either reinforced or completely ignored, wether the leaders see fit or not. It grew stronger with its bond of same ideas and general agreement on defiance. Yet, this attitude has changed to platoon. Some people talk about how it is hard to find motivation to do anything, but the negativity from this group has also affected to moral of the soldiers with its frenzied conversations about this disorganized platoon. The attitudes of soldiers are rarely happy, there is now more negativity within it causing soldiers to take up drinking to wash away their unhappiness, it seems. King Lear: The Role of the Fool Essay In Shakespeares, King Lear, the Fool plays three major roles. One of these roles is of an inner-conscience of Lear. The Fool provides basic wisdom and reasoning for the King at much needed times. The Fool also works as amusement for Lear in times of sadness and is also one of the only people besides the Duke of Kent and Cordelia who are willing to stand up to the King. The Fool works as the inner conscience of Lear throughout the play. The Fool shows Lear the side of reasoning and tries to persuade Lear that it was wrong to banish Cordelia. The Fool only first appears in Act 1, scene four, after Cordelia has moved away with the King of France. The Fool knows that Lear has done wrong by giving all his land away to his to evil daughters, Goneril and Regan, and tells him so in act one, scene four, when he says, All thy other titles thou hast given away; that thou wast born with. The Fool also warns Lear about Goneril and Regan stating that Lear is now a lap dog to Goneril and Regan, Truths a dog must to kennel; he must be whipped out when the Lady Brach may stand by the fire and stink. The Fool disappears in act three, when Lear goes mad. This shows that the Fool is Lears view of reasoning because when a person goes insane they cannot think straight or reason and therefore after act three there is no need for Lear to have a Fool as he is mad. The Fool also tries to help Lear to feel a bit better about what is going on by putting a humorous spin on the words he is saying. The Fool uses poetry and song to get his view across to Lear. In act one, this is visible in numerous ways. For example, in scene four the Fool sings:Then they for sudden joy did weep,And I for sorrow sung,That such a King should play bo-peepAnd go the fools among. This little verse helps the Fool the show Lear again that dividing his kingdom was a mistake. The Fool throughout this act also refers to Lear as a fool himself and many times offers him his coxcomb. In King Lear, there are only three people with the ability to stand up to Lear. Cordelia, Kent and the Fool. During the play Lear threatens to have the Fool whipped for what he says, when Cordelia and Kent get banished from the Kingdom for speaking their minds. This just shows the special relationship the Fool and Lear have during the play. This point is emphasised later in the play when Lear shows concern and compassion towards the Fool, Come on, my boy. How dost my boy, art thou cold?The Fool is not just a servant to Lear but is also a friend and the son Lear never had. The name Fool means nothing. He is the most intelligent and insightful character in the play and provides simple and clear reasoning for a one sighted King. The Fool is loyal to the bitter end and provides the little bits of humour in this play. He has honesty and integrity that is only found in a few other characters in the play.
